Estimated Number of Ethiopian Restaurants in Major Cities
The popularity of Ethiopian food has increased significantly over the past few years, with more restaurants opening in major cities across the country. One of the main drivers of this growth is the impact of social media, which has introduced a wider audience to the food and culture. For our market research, we focused on major cities where there are at least five Ethiopian restaurants.
Washington, D.C. Area
The Washington, D.C. area has the largest concentration of Ethiopian restaurants compared to other regions across the country. This area includes Arlington, VA, Silver Spring, MD, Baltimore, MD, and Washington, D.C. itself. The table below provides an estimated count of Ethiopian restaurants in this region.
New York Area
The New York Area also has a solid number of Ethiopian restaurants. While it may not have as many as the Washington, D.C. area, Ethiopian cuisine is still quite popular in cities like Manhattan and Brooklyn. There are a few Ethiopian restaurants in Upstate New York, but the number remains below five. The New York Area in this report includes Philadelphia, Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Boston. The chart below presents an estimate of the Ethiopian restaurants in this region.
Midwest
Surprisingly, there is a significant presence of Ethiopian restaurants in the Midwest. In cities such as Chicago, Illinois; Columbus, Ohio; and Minneapolis, Minnesota, the popularity of Ethiopian cuisine is rising. There is also a large Ethiopian population in this area. The chart below displays estimated numbers of Ethiopian restaurants in major Midwest cities.
The South
The South has seen a noticeable increase in the number of Ethiopian restaurants. In cities like Charlotte, North Carolina, and Atlanta, Georgia, residents have embraced Ethiopian food and culture. This region includes cities like Houston, Austin, and Dallas, Texas. However, Ethiopian restaurants are scarce in the Miami area, possibly due to the high cost of operating a business in this expensive real estate market. The chart below shows the estimated number of restaurants in the South.
West Coast
The West Coast is home to a large Ethiopian and Eritrean population. Cities such as Los Angeles, California, and Seattle, Washington, have become hubs for Ethiopian cuisine, attracting both Ethiopians and non-Ethiopians alike. The West Coast also includes cities like Denver, Colorado; Phoenix, Arizona; and Portland, Oregon. The chart below outlines the estimated number of Ethiopian restaurants on the West Coast.
Canada
The number of Ethiopian restaurants in Canada is surprisingly high, primarily due to the significant Ethiopian and Eritrean communities in cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Both cities have more than 25 Ethiopian restaurants.
Europe
Ethiopian restaurants in Europe are flourishing due to the large number of Ethiopians and Eritreans living on the continent. In cities like London, United Kingdom, and Berlin, Germany, Ethiopian food has become quite popular. The chart below presents an estimate of Ethiopian restaurants in Europe.
Dubai
Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, has emerged as a popular destination for business and tourism. Many Ethiopians live and work there, and according to our estimates, there are more than eight Ethiopian restaurants in the city.
The future looks promising for Ethiopian restaurants globally. As restaurant owners increasingly leverage social media to reach millions, more people are likely to try Ethiopian food. The number of Ethiopian restaurants worldwide is expected to double as the cuisine's popularity continues to grow.
